Bird School of Music at Town School

Welcome!

Bird School of Music understands that every family has unique expectations for their child’s music education. We offer a personalized approach, tailoring lessons to individual needs and learning styles.

Understanding Your Needs:
We acknowledge that some families prioritize fun and exposure to music, while others seek a more structured approach with a focus on fundamentals and practice. Our goal is to work with you to understand your specific aspirations for your child’s musical journey. This information, along with a completed questionnaire, helps us craft the best learning experience possible.

Open Communication:
We encourage open communication throughout your child’s enrollment. Feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or updates regarding your child’s progress. We also offer monitored communication with your child’s instructor, ensuring all messages are received and addressed promptly.

What will my child learn in these lessons?
Your child will receive a strong foundation in music, encompassing:

  • Fundamentals: Learning music notation, rhythm, and basic playing techniques for their chosen instrument.
  • Creativity and Fun: Encouraging self-expression and fostering a lifelong love of music.

What should I expect?
With consistent attendance, engagement, and practice, your child can develop:

  • Early Musical Foundation: Reading beginner music, applying it to their instrument, and mastering basic playing and practice techniques.
  • Rhythmic Skills: Understanding and performing different rhythms.

How much practice is recommended?
We recommend daily practice sessions, starting with 5 minutes and gradually increasing as your child progresses. Ideally, aim for 10-15 minutes daily, including free exploration and creative play with the instrument.

What materials do we need?

  • Instruments: Provided for use during lessons at Town School
  • Method Books: Each student will be provided a book for home practice
  • Notebook: For teacher notes and assignments

Where can I find my child’s homework?
Your child’s music book will have notes from their instructor on what to practice during the week.

Do you only use books?
We utilize reputable curriculum materials but also encourage playing songs and melodies your child enjoys. Their teacher can help them learn by ear or with simplified arrangements.

What happens if my teacher is absent?
We strive to provide substitute teachers whenever possible. If unavailable, we’ll notify you and offer alternative options like rescheduling or providing supplemental materials.

How many teachers will my child have?
We aim for consistency, assigning the same instructor for the entire trimester. However, due to our instructors being professional musicians, occasional changes may occur. We prioritize minimizing changes while ensuring high-quality instruction.

What instruments do you offer?
Currently, Bird offers instruction on drums, guitar, piano, and ukulele.

Are there performance opportunities?
Yes, Bird collaborates with Town School to offer an end-of-year recital in the school cafeteria.
