This session we'll be mellowing out with reggae and rocksteady - the post-ska, pre-reggae form of Jamaican music
that arose in the mid-1960s.
Rocksteady's rich fusion of American doo wop, R&B, jazz, ska, African and Latin American drumming and other genres
will give us lots of material to play with. We'll explore some of the vocal harmonies, off-beat rhythms and
chord progressions indicative of rocksteady and see how they evolved with the rise of reggae in the late 1960s.
Reggae's off-beat guitar or piano accents, combined with the drums' emphasis on the third beat and and the use
of syncopated, melodic bass lines, create a unique feel and sense of phrasing that differentiates reggae from other
music. We'll study these unique patterns and also look at how other musical styles have incorporated some of these
innovations.
