The Word from Bird School of Music
July 27, 2009

Dear Parents & Musicians:

It’s been awhile since we last communicated.  We have been lucky enough to see and hear from some of you over the course of the summer but we’d like to check in with the rest of you to let you know what’s been happening and what’s about to.

Camp
Our Summer of Love has proved to be way more productive than any hippie would probably ever care to have been.  Students arrive here daily to explore the music that came from that special time and place, delighting in a diverse catalogue and some great local history.  We’ve just finished up our 5th week of camp and were treated to yet another great performance by our very talented campers.  Check out some of our campers performing "Help" on YouTube. There’s room in upcoming weeks, so sign up online if you’re in the market for a good jam, good friends and good fun.

On that note, we’re very excited to offer campers a limited edition opportunity during the week of August 17-21.  We're partnering with our fine friends Noise Pop to present a week of Indie Rock. It’s an intense week of music focusing on performance, songwriting and recording.  Songs featured will be from artists that have played the many stages in the 17 years of San Francisco's Noise Pop Festival.  All students will be encouraged to collaborate and form a band for the ultimate end of the week performance and recording of the song.  Noise Pop artists past and present will be visiting to perform and engage with the camp daily.

Back to School
It’s really not that far away or as bad as it seems.  We, of course, can’t wait to see you all again and we’d love to hear from you as soon as cowboy boots possible to secure your lesson/band rehearsal slot.  When our Fall session begins September 21, 2009, we’ll be kicking with cowboy boots as our opening theme is Country Music.  Come on ya’ll, if T-Pain can make a rap singer out of Taylor Swift, and if Loretta Lynn can find common ground with Jack White, can we not convince you that delving into unfamiliar territory is mind-broadening?

We offer both an 11-week and a 7-week session depending on your experience, so check here for details and schedule.

Students on Stage
We have the distinct pleasure of working with a band that will play at least two major gigs this fall, Bird students all.

On September 12, 2009, 6 musicians will perform a 30-minute set at the Power to the Peaceful Festival.  In October, this philanthropic group will headline SPECTRUM, a silent/live art auction/fundraiser for the Access Institute at The Mezzanine.  They have yet to name themselves.

Photos
Finally, we are pleased to offer you an entire archive of all the great photos taken at our Bird Concerts—from our first, rather humble gathering on Polk Street to our most recent Pavilion rock shows.  See how they’ve grown.

Yoga
Change brings enlightenment and growth.  Really.  Currently our wonderful Monday/Wednesday/Friday class at 9am (note time change), taught lovingly and expertly by K.T. Steadman on Mondays and Elizabeth Rosser on Wednesday/Friday.  Our practice is characterized by a tiny student/instructor ratio so you’ll always receive the best and the most individual attention.

Big Band
The Bird Big Band is looking for students ages 14-19 to play big band jazz! Click here for details about auditioning.
