The Word from Bird School of Music
July 25, 2008

Hi All.

It’s mid-summer and we trust that you are relaxing and enjoying the non-routine of the season.  While we’ve been taking it pretty easy ourselves, we are also very excited to let you know about some of the things we have on the immediate horizon as well as what to expect in the Fall.

First of all, thanks to all of you who have been with us from Day One, which is now seemingly very long ago.  While it has been a roundabout evolution, you have accompanied Bird on its journey from the small space upstairs to what we used to think was the big space below, all the while exploring the finer details of playing music together.   We’ve shared everything from the Beatles to the MTV-influenced hits of the 80’s.  We all bit our nails as musicians tackled the offbeat rhythms of the Police.  When Lynyrd Skynrd and other southern greats graced our repertoire, we watched in awe as guitar players of all ages stepped up to the challenge.  And when we visited the Motor City and Memphis our students delighted their audience with a genuine appreciation for the origin of much of today’s music.

Most recently, this summer, we have gotten a huge kick out of updating the classic bad tunes of the 70’s, not only playing them but also creating our own video homage to those silly masterpieces that are so etched in our (parents only) collective memory.  Have a look at what’s up for the rest of the summer and what’s new for fall, including the theme for the first session of the new school year…

Coming up: The Theme for Session I, 2008 is...
Drum roll please...RECENTLY RECORDED!  Songs from 2007 and 2008.  We’ve been living in the past and have had a great time reminiscing.  Now it’s time for you all to show us how great the music of today really is. Find a song that was recorded in the last year and make it your own.   We’ll do our research as well even though surely you think we think they don’t make 'em like they used to (or that it’s all rooted in what came before).  Check the website soon for restrictions such as Avoid the 3 H’s—Hannah Montana, High School Musical 2 and Hip Hop; guidelines such as: iTunes is your oyster; and suggestions such as: We like Bon Iver, Okkervil River, Lavender Diamond, The Hold Steady, Rilo Kiley, Sia.
