Hi Musicians and Parents,
Hard to believe that we’re on the verge of summer and the final showcase of the school year, here at Bird on June 10. Seems like only yesterday that we were treated to the performances of 14 bands, some composed of children, some of adults and one of both children and adults. The songs played were chosen from the catalogue of The Police, a band that achieved major success in the early 80’s only to dissolve at the peak of their popularity and return just this year. Good music proves timeless once again. A specific artist or genre, by virtue of its consistency can promote learning in much the same way as flash cards do in a classroom.
Yes, the applause and the lights are nice but secondary to what drives these kids and their parents. (Not really, but we can dream) Actually the lights are kind of annoying and the sound is never what anyone expects it to be, but that is another letter. What these young performers present stems from a different motivation (than rock stardom—dreaming on) and therefore yields the heartwarming result of earnest accomplishment. Or in the instance of a performance not living up to the performers’ expectations, the ensuing disappointment can be, must be, translated into knowledge and support rather than resignation and failure. It’s a lesson in perseverance, responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect. And they figure it out themselves. And it’s great even when it’s not great. Time to wake up now…
Check out what’s on tap for the next couple of weeks and beyond.

Don't miss the American Conservatory Theatre's production of Fields of Gold, a special collaboration with Bird. Premieres June 1 at the Zeum Theatre. Click here for details and tickets.
