The Word from Bird

MARCH 15, 2007

Dear Parents & Musicians:

Here's what's happening and coming up at Bird.  Mark your calendars:

STING AUDITIONS: Monday, March 19.  7pm-9pm.  Sign up now.  Bird collaborates again this year with The American Conservatory Theatre to put on an original work based on the music and lyrics of Sting ("Fields of Gold: The Music of Sting").  We need bassists, guitar players, drummers and percussionists ages 14-18.  We'll rehearse at Bird Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 27.  Performances will be at Zeum June 1-17, 2007.  Visit our website for audition requirements and full schedule.

DRUM CLINIC: March 24, 3pm.  Join us to learn The History of the Drum Set, Solos and Duets, Drum Set Setup and Tuning, Hand Drums and Percussion Basics.  Plus you'll get a new set of sticks and manuscripts to take home.  Bring music with your favorite drum parts and we will learn the beats and how to transcribe them.  All this for $25 -- download a flyer or email info@bird-sf.com to RSVP.

SUMMER CAMP: Our summer camp schedule is now available.  Join us for 2-week intensives on Songwriting, Band Workshops and The Police.  See website for course descriptions and schedules.

MUSICIANS' YOGA: Come to our restorative yoga class Friday mornings from 10-11.  Common musician's problems range from stiffness in the shoulders, neck and back to repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.  We'll target these areas with a simple, invirgorating regimen that will help you balance the physical and mental pressures inherent in this crazy profession.

WEEKEND AND EVENING YOGA: Sundays at 10am.  Come for a morning workout and be done in time for brunch.  Polk Street has great restaurants!  Mondays at 7pm.  Meet after work for a mix of great music, strengthening and stretching.  Weekday classes also available.  See website for full schedule.

HIP HOP CLASS: Beginning April 16 we'll be offering Monday hip hop classes, 8-12-year-olds from 4-5:15pm and 13-18-year-olds from 5:30-6:45.

Session III
Session III bands are well underway with The Police. In constrast to the last session (Sun Studio) where the emphasis was on the blues, the kids are now learning to interpret the complex (however derivative), counterintuitive rhythmic arrangements of Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers and Sting. It's an exercise in starting from scratch but it will most definitely enrich and equip them to play just about anything. The material has got us all thinking just a little bit harder and hopefully practicing a little bit more diligently.

New Yoga Tank
We've got a cute new yoga tank for sale at Bird, in serene sky blue with a zippy little chili-pepper-red hummingbird on the front and the Bird Yoga logo on the back. $22 including tax.
