Hello to all musicians. Last week, the first day of summer reminded me that we had yet to wrap up
the past year with a thank you and a nod to what's ahead for Bird.
We are particularly grateful to have completed our first (school calendar) year of Bird and to have
begun our second summer camp session. What marked the end of an amazing season was the showcase of
incredible talent that took place on June 4. We watched 11 bands take the stage in an incredibly
cool venue in front of an immense, standing-room-only audience that exceeded 200. The Beatles were
covered with skill and enthusiasm —- the set list began with Yellow Submarine and ended with a long
jam of Back in the USSR that included several of the Young Conservatory actors from the cast of
Across The Universe (the most recent ACT production at Zeum). Parents, students and our host,
ValueAct Capital Partners, all deserve a standing ovation for the many efforts that amounted to
a hugely successful afternoon.
Our construction has reached epic proportions. The floors are open and anticipating two new
stairwells. The bathroom has been expanded to accommodate handicap code. A new mode of egress is
slated for the same purpose. The stone has arrived for the wall behind the stage. A concrete slab was
poured last week and is causing major condensation on the street level windows. We've purchased an
amazing sound board that will be used to control our audio throughout the building. It will also
allow us to interface with our existing and new digital recording capabilities. Interested Bird
students can learn to use this digital recording technology to engineer their own group's live and
recorded sound. Three individual, sound-proof class rooms are about to be framed downstairs. Our
custom-made ping pong table is on its way. All this and more to be finished in August!?!?!?
Have a great summer,
Reunion Jam
The And Your Bird Can Sing Tour was so successful and fun that we'd like to do it again.
Tentatively scheduled for August 25 from 5:30-8pm. We're hosting an evening of music and
refreshments for all those who participated in the June 4 concert. It will occur in the new
space at 1924 Polk Street. Gather your band and come play your song to your most supportive
audience -- your fellow Bird bands. Be the first to sample the subterranean stage and cutting
edge equipment. Sign up now by calling 441-3551 or emailing info@bird-sf.com.
