January 22, 2006
Hi Bird Families,
We hope that you are settling safely and soundly into the New Year. Perhaps out of habit,
it seems we all find new hope on the first day of January — whether it be a desire to achieve
a previously unrealized goal or an expectation that somehow this year we'll lick whatever
deficiency we (or those who know us well) perceive we have. The notion of starting fresh
is positively irresistible. Then, maybe even as soon as January 2, we are inevitably stopped
dead in our ambitious tracks by the minutia and our hopes are dashed as quickly and as
indiscriminately as they surfaced until next January.
Like it or not, it's time to get back into the routine of after school activities and the
juggling of sports schedules with artistic endeavors in order to keep our children well rounded
and well resumed for life ahead. The cynic would consider the logistical mayhem that he or she
has created to be simply a matter of protocol motivated by concepts similar to "a necessary evil,"
"keeping up with the Joneses" and "when in Rome." The optimist must believe that whatever is
sacrificed will be paid back in the form of a happy, healthy, enthusiastic, self-possessed human being.
So...in case you aren't excited about the prospect of shuttling your brood to band practice when
our next session begins, have a look at what's up at Bird beginning this week:
January 23 marks the official beginning of Bird's next session. Bands are in place and the
performance is scheduled for March 19, 2006. Those already on board should contemplate song
choices before attending the first rehearsal. Lane has been doing some contemplating himself
and will present your band with suggestions for your consideration. We pretty much can't wait!
We have moved from the street level location to the space just adjacent and slightly above it.
All the equipment you used below is up there — it sounds and looks great. Little Bird is
officially located at 1930 Polk Street. As you all know, the reason for the relocation is that
construction has begun to make the "old" venue a two-level, multi-purpose teaching environment
with individual classrooms, a permanent performance space and a professional recording studio
(which means there will also be a ping pong table). Optimistic projected completion date:
June 2006. Cynical projected completion date: September 2006.
All the best,

We have a piano teacher!
Dave Mihaly, a multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist will be on site every Thursday
afternoon to offer keyboard instruction.

Wanted:
Dad band to even out our line-up. Last session, along with the amazing kids,
we had a group composed of older, yet equally enthusiastic musicians who happened
to be moms. Wouldn't it be fun to see what happens when dads get together to play?
