The Word on Bird
Bird is a school of music, an art space, a performance venue, a recording facility and even a
yoga studio.
Here, music and technology come together in a positive and safe environment. Students are
encouraged to use what's current to enhance their creative musical ideas. We emphasize technique and
exposure to all genres of music, enabling musicians to build on familiar ideas to produce
something unique. We like to think of our work as the intersection of music, community and technology.
Music
Bird provides instrumental instruction and band supervision to children (ages 7+), young adults and
adults. Our musical offerings include instrumental and voice instruction, bands, private and semi-private lessons,
rehearsal space, special clinics and workshops and professional audio and video services. For more
information on our music instruction and recording services, please see the Music page.
Co-founder and director Lane Murchison is an experienced musician, instructor, composer and
producer who performs regularly in the Bay Area and beyond. Private lesson instructors, a house
engineer, student interns and guest artists drive our clinics, lessons and workshops.
Community
All students are encouraged to collaborate in jams, bands and special projects. Beyond music
instruction and production, Bird hosts yoga classes, art shows, musical performances and other
events. We are a resource and a gathering place, drawing on the mutual creative vibe present
in all these disciplines.
Bird donates a portion of its profits to programs promoting music in schools and local arts.
Technology
Students use technology to evaluate critical skills such as timing
and hearing. Working with the latest DAW (digital audio
workstations), all experience levels have the ability to archive
their songs, jams and lessons.
In addition to vital old-school knowledge like setting up amps and
other analog equipment, students gain an understanding of
computer-based music recording equipment and software.
